Paws in Schools

Specially Trained Animals for any School Environment

Improving the overall wellbeing of students with specially trained animals.

Animals for all students, from Foundation to Year 12 and Undergraduate University Courses.

Paws in Schools Overview

Therapy animals in a school setting can contribute towards improving the overall wellbeing of students. Many children and teenagers naturally enjoy interacting with animals and are therefore likely to respond positively to animal therapy.

Our specialised educators recognise that each school setting is unique and has its own set of guiding principles, philosophies and values. Paws in Schools (by Therapy Animals Australia) specialises in tailoring programs to suit specific needs.

Therapy Animals Australia will work closely with you to explore possible applications, then design and implement a program that best matches your school’s specific needs.

Spend time helping you to decide on your objectives, the type and scale of animals that will suit your school, as well as giving our advice on how to best care for your animals.

Support you in incorporating animal therapy across your school and/or we can bring our animals to you if that is the direction you would like to pursue.

How it Works…

Being qualified teachers we can come in with our animals and teach students and run sessions for schools.

Providing/ sourcing and training animals to be used in schools (using rescue animals where possible).

Providing professional development and information for teachers and the wider school community.

Working with teachers to develop and implement suitable programs.

PROGRAM A

Guided Animal Therapy Sessions

Emotional support. Develop emotional regulation skills. Positive education. General wellbeing. Coping strategies. Develop social skills. Mindfulness & growth mindsets.

More than just spending time with lovely animals, specific goals are identified and set (with teachers and/or parents) in order to best meet the unique needs of the selected individuals or small groups.

Ideal for all students and for students who need…

  • Assistance in coping with the demands of daily school life
  • Support from a traumatic experience
  • Help coping with a health problem or mental disorder (such as a developmental delay, emotional and/or behavioural disorder, high anxiety levels, autism spectrum disorders).

Having a set task is an important part of each therapy session, in order for participants to feel a sense of achievement. It may be feeding animals, making a toy for an animal to play with, or assisting handlers with the training of one of the animals.

PROGRAM B

Intervention Sessions & Programs

A low pressure, relaxed environment with animals.

Add fun & excitement and help make intervention sessions seem less taxing by including a therapy animal. There’s no judgement from the animals and therefore less pressure.

Ideal for students in need of literacy & numeracy assistance…
